Call me paranoid, but I don't reckon we're getting the whole picture here.
―The veteran's experience telling him that something's wrong

The A Shau Veteran is a member of the Wardogs gang in Manhunt. His name is an unofficial one given to him for convenient identification. He is named as such due to him allegedly claiming to have partaken in the Battle of A Sầu in the Vietnam War.[1]

Background[]

Distinguishable by the mild Southerner voice that he speaks in when he's not excited by the thrill of the kill, this Wardog is a man who sounds like he has seen it all.

This Wardog's claims of military service include having been to the A Sầu Valley in the Battle of A Sầu of the Vietnam War[1] and being a paratrooper.[2] It is implied he is a heavy drinker[3] and has awake bruxism that might be derived from his stress and anxiety.[4]

Personality and Mannerisms[]

  • Like other Wardogs, he communicates using military slang, acronyms, and even the NATO phonetic alphabet.
  • He has the generic hunter personality found throughout Manhunt, but with a few additions/differences as what seems to be a callous veteran.
    • He can get bored during times of inactivity during the manhunt, seeing how he expected some violent action with their runner.[5]
    • He feels very excited to fight and kill their runner, which causes him so much anxiety that he wants to relieve.[6]
    • When beaten to near death, he will feel that his death is not in vain as he is confident there are plenty more Wardogs for Cash to deal with,[7] think that Cash doesn't have the strength to finish him off,[8] admit his inferiority,[9] beg for his mercy (but not in a pathetic way),[10] surrender and suggest taking him as a prisoner,[11] or try to make him see sense.[12]
  • He has the disposition of an army veteran who has seen it all. Plus, he has an air of experience in his mild and calm voice which goes away when he's excited to kill, such as situations when he spots Cash.
    • He is nonchalant to stuff that's unnerving or worrying to others, like dead comrades (implying dwindling numbers and thus strength)[13] and Cash stalking him.[14]
    • He was correct in forecasting rainy weather later on (proven by later scenes like Drunk Driving)[15] and can sense Cash stalking him, regardless if he's around him or not.[14][16] He also thinks that there's something off about the manhunt,[17] such as Cash being replaceable with another runner if he dies.[18]
    • He thought that he's done with chasing after runners, maybe because he's retired.[19]

Relationships[]

Family[]

He may mention to the Wardogs that his significant other gets aroused by the kind of violence found in the manhunt.[20]

With the Wardogs[]

When he is with another Wardog, he'll tell them that he likes their boots.[21] Upon meeting his comrades, he will make a remark on their excitement,[22] issue a command to take up flanking positions for later on,[23] and tell them to be patient.[24] He also trusts his Wardogs to avenge him.[7]

Like some of the other Wardogs, he celebrates and indulges in kills made by his group and himself.[25]

Since he wants to get Cash first before anyone else,[26][27] he will be the point man before anyone else if possible[28][29][30] or race others when getting a lead on Cash.[31]

With Valiant Video and the manhunt[]

He regrets not bringing snivel gear and food to the manhunt,[32] as well as some gum that would've stopped him from grinding his teeth out of anxiety.[4] He did bring some of his own chewing tobacco to stay alert, but he is running out of it.[33]

He seems to know that there's something not right about the manhunt that's being hidden from them[17] and has heard rumors of the hunt's runner being replaceable after he is killed by the Wardogs.[18] He calls the hunt for Cash a “zippo mission”.[34]

With Cash[]

The pessimistic and paranoid A Sầu Veteran believes that their runner is replaceable if he dies, which he isn't pleased by.[18] Through sheer intuition or experience, this alleged veteran seems to sense Cash and feels wary as a result,[16] but decides to let himself be stalked.[14] He's also unsure if he should underestimate or overestimate this runner.[35] Regardless, he just wants to be the first hunter to kill Cash to sate his thirst for violence.[26][27]
