―Darkwoods Penitentiary introduction in Mouth of Madness

Darkwoods Penitentiary is a penitentiary and mental asylum in Carcer City that appears in Manhunt.

Description[]

The prison's modern facility, holding over 1000 inmates (mostly murderers and the criminally insane) from all over America, housed a number of mentally ill individuals, who would later become the Smileys gang after the prison's overthrow.

The prison also carries out death sentences in the form of the electric chair and lethal injection. The staff began taking bribes from Lionel Starkweather to use inmates in his snuff films.

In 2000, James Earl Cash was imprisoned at the Darkwoods Penitentiary and sentenced to death three years later, however, Starkweather bribes the staff to free him, whilst the public believe him to be executed. [1] A young journalist for the Carcer City News, present at the execution, suspects it to be a hoax and later confirms it, using it as evidence to expose Starkweather's snuff film ring. [2]

While Cash is set loose on a killing spree on orders of Starkweather, the prison inmates somehow break free and eliminates the prison guards. The prisoners, now known as the Smileys, eventually take over the prison. [3] Bloodstains and graffiti texts can be found on the walls off the prison. The corpses of their victims, possibly orderlies or other inmates, can be found hanging from the ceiling of the prison facilities.

Trivia[]

  • During the scene Kill the Rabbit, two corpses can be found in the electric chair room: one laying on a bed and another tied to the electric chair. These corpses are actually early beta versions of Cash's model, slightly modified to look like dead bodies.
    • There is also a covered man in a stretcher next to one of the aforementioned corpses. If the player approaches it, he will wake up and scream, then lays back.
