Barry is one of the members of The Smileys in Manhunt.

Background

What can be gathered from his ramblings is that Barry once had a wife and children, but he was a heavy drinker, neglectful, lazy, unfaithful, and abusive too, which were the main sources of discontent for his wife and often led her to complain and nag.

At some point, Barry eventually couldn't tolerate her nagging anymore, and killed his own wife with a Crowbar out of anger, and was sent to Darkwoods Penitentiary. These events would drive him insane and caused him to begin assuming her identity.

Personality and Mannerisms

• Barry, as mentioned previously, assumes the identity and personality of his wife, constantly reminding himself of his past sins, likely out of guilt.
  • He often imitates her comments about his drunken behavior, neglect, laziness, two-timing, and abuse towards her and their children.
  • Alot of his rambling implies that he was cheating on his wife with another woman, which was one of the major strains on their relationship.
  • It's also implied that he was very lazy, as he has some dialogues mentioning how he only left the house to cheat on his wife and/or get drunk. One of his dialogues mentions him spending his time on the internet, which is where his wife suspects he found his mistress.
  • He sometimes comments on her death, sarcastically mocking her murder in her voice, claiming she deserved to be killed for annoying him. Other times, he may cry, begging for forgiveness.
  • When beaten to the ground, Barry will continue to react in his wife persona, most likely imitating her exact words during her murder.

Relationships

Family

A terrible father and husband, frequently being drunk, unfaithful, violent, and neglectful towards his only family. His wife tried to make him see sense, but eventually became bitter and frequently complained, to the point where Barry killed her out of annoyance, and later became insane.

Not much is mentioned about his daughters, but it's implied that they were distant, because his behavior scared them.

With the Smileys

Likely due to his insanity, he barely interacts with other Smileys, seemingly lost in his own persona. The only times he can be seen interacting with them is when he shouts upon spotting a dead body, but due to the nature of his dialogues, it seems that he reacts without realizing he's alerting other hunters.

With Cash

He often sees Cash as himself while assuming his wife's identity, referring to Cash the same way his wife referred to him, likely as a projection. It's unknown if this delusion was inflicted by his own mind, or someone from Valiant Video Enterprises or maybe even Starkweather told him this in order to give him a reason to hunt Cash down.

• The model most associated with Barry is the dark-skinned Smiley in a pink dress, used for the target Smiley on the guard tower in Mouth of Madness.
